LEARNING AND APPLYING THE TRADITIONAL PIANO TECHNIQUE -

Dear Piano Teacher,
You are unique in your profession because you nurture a young child in the process of learning music which will affect his/her life for many years to come. The child you reach every week will become the future virtuoso, the future symphony goer and supporter, the future school music teacher, the future church musician and a person who will give much pleasure to those who surround them.

When it comes to the piano, there are no fixed laws on the teaching of technique and this results in teachers finding their own way to establish a method which will contribute to a excellent and exiting performance. In singing, the Italians have a natural instinct, strengthened by years of experience for tone production and projection. With string players, all good teachers of violin, viola, cello, and bass teach principles of technique in a particular, standard and traditional way, and with seldom any technical problems arising.

Technic is the great means by which the hands, arms and fingers become so responsive to the brain and heart and so capable when moving, that every emotional thought finds adequate expression and is easy to execute. The fingers express only what the mind sees and feels.

There are no known published texts which teach the young pianist exactly how to negotiate each finger; how to have a supple wrist, how to play bravura passages with ease, relaxation and swiftness. and yes, there are many incompetent ideas that are thrown out for the grabbing.

But there IS a truly, correct TECHNIC that covers all the pertinent aspects of performance. It has been taught to the great pianists of our time by master teachers, who in turn learned from the European master teachers. (Levine, Leschetizky, Padreweski.)

I was fortunate to have been taught these principles many years ago. These simple and clever finger exercises were published circa 1902 by A. K. Virgil in New York City, director of The Virgil School of Music.

Ironically, I inherited the two texts that Mr. Virgil published and have now converted them into a manual that will help teachers and students develop a fantastic technic.

My decision to share these secrets with my colleagues has stemmed from the poor technical playing of young students that I have observed during my many years of adjudications across the country.

One does not need to study piano only to become a concert pianist. WHATEVER music that person chooses should be and needs to be played well and easily done and with great tone.

You will not be sorry.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Carson
